Ninety illegal immigrants from Syria aboard a boat off Cape Greco

More than ninety illegal immigrants from Syria were aboard a boat that was detected by the Police sailing off Cape Greco yesterday at noon.

According to the Press Office of the Police Headquarters, around 14:00 yesterday a boat with immigrants was detected 14 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco.

A Port Police boat went to the spot and the boat was stopped to be checked 5 nautical miles off Cape Greco.

Around 17:00 yesterday, the Port Police boat with members of the Aliens and Immigration Unit managed to approach the boat.

However, due to health-related issues, such as a pregnant woman, along with her baby and a minor boy with his mother, instructions were given to be transported to the General Hospital of Famagusta, where they would be treated. After that, they were taken back to the fishing shelter of Agios Nikolaos.

At around 11 pm, all 13 women and 31 children aboard the boat were transported by the Port Police boat to the fishing shelter of Agios Nikolaos (Golden Coast).

Also, two women and six minor children were transported as a precaution to the General Hospital of Famagusta where they were treated. After that, they were taken back to the fishing shelter of Agios Nikolaos.

A temporary camp was set up by the Civil Defence in ​​the fishing shelter area and the women and children were given blankets and clothes as well as water and food.

About 50 men remained on the boat off Cape Greco and, according to police, they had departed from the Syrian city of Tartus.
