A march in memory and honor of the struggles of the Nation and the Awakening of the Cypriot Hellenism has been organized by the Autonomous Student Groups DRASIS-KES, Metopo KFIKI, AFK NIKI TEPAK, AFK Aichmi Komotinis, the University of Cyprus Independent Student Group EPALXI and the Autonomous Student Movement EFEN. The march will take place tomorrow, March 25 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.

Their message in detail:

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, when the Greek people rose up against the Ottoman Empire to finally win their national independence and freedom. We honor the heroes of the Greek nation as well as the principles and values that inspired and pushed them into acts of heroism and self-sacrifice. The lessons of the epic popular uprising are that the love of freedom combined with the fighting spirit are the precursors of success for the struggles of all enslaved people who aim to shake off their conqueror.

However, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution is not enough. The moments of national ordeal the Cypriot Hellenism is going through with the ongoing occupation and the danger of survival that it faces with the forthcoming Five-Party Conference, impose the remembrance of the great moments of history as an act of fight awakening and a reminder to the ones responsible for the Cyprus problem that the ‘sellout’ of Cyprus with compromises that fuel tyranny, contrary to the indestructible values of freedom and justice, represented by the epic revolution of ’21, will not be allowed.

A necessary condition for common discourse and action is non-partisan collectivity, an umbrella under which the tacit and invisible majority can make its verdict. We therefore call on all nationally minded citizens who honor the Greek Revolution of 1821 and at the same time are concerned about the complete clash of positions in the Cyprus issue between the party leaderships and the people to participate in the march that will begin on Thursday, March 25 at 11:00 am at the parking lot of the Old Hospital of Nicosia and will end up at the Greek Embassy.

For Christ’s Holy Faith and the Homeland’s Freedom.

All participants are asked to wear masks and keep the necessary distances.
