According to Russian media, during the Christmas gathering at the Ministry of National Defence and in response to a relevant question, the Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, stated that the S-300s may be delivered to Ukraine if the US deploys a Patriot system in Crete and once it is integrated into the national air defence system. He added that the same procedure applies to any other Russian air defence system they (the US) would like to send to Ukraine.
Russia’s ambassador to Crimea, Georgy Muratov, told the Russian state agency “Ria Novosti” that the Greek authorities’ delivery of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to the Ukrainian Government is a dangerous step for the national interests of Greece.
He also stated that Greece should remember that Moscow gave the S-300 anti-aircraft system to Cyprus at the end of the last century, when he was the Russian ambassador in Nicosia.
He also added that the S-300s do not work against Russia, since they are equipped with a special “friend-foe” identification system.
