Ministry of Foreign Affairs | Greek citizens to leave Ukraine immediately – Two expatriates dead

The Greek Foreign Ministry urges Greek citizens in Ukraine to leave the country. 

In the same statement, it states that it “strongly discourages all travel across Ukraine.” In a recent announcement, the Foreign Ministry announced that two Greek expatriates lost their lives and two others were injured in the village of Granitna, which is near the line of contact in eastern Ukraine after a clash with Ukrainian soldiers for an insignificant cause.

In more detail, on Monday morning a meeting was held with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, National Defence, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Education and Religions, Niki Kerameos, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Katsaniotis on the situation in the region.

At the end of the meeting in a relevant announcement, the Foreign Minister states that it “strongly discourages all travel across the territory of Ukraine, and at the same time advises Greek citizens who are in the country to leave the country immediately,” while “Greek citizens who have not already left are advised to immediately declare their contact details to the Greek Embassy in Kyiv.”

The announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

“A meeting was convened this morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, attended by the Ministers of National Defence, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, the Minister of Education and Religions, Niki Kerameos, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Katsaniotis, as well as officials of the said Ministries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly discourages all travel across the territory of Ukraine and at the same time urges Greek citizens in the country to leave the country immediately.

Greek citizens who have not already left are also advised to immediately report their contact details to the Greek Embassy in Kyiv.

It is also noted that because of the situation the personnel of the Kyiv Embassy has been reduced to the bare minimum.

At the same time, the personnel of the Consulate General of Mariupol will be strengthened.

Two expatriates killed

Two Greek expatriates were killed and two others were injured in the village of Granitna, near the line of contact in eastern Ukraine, after a clash with Ukrainian soldiers for an unknown reason, according to a statement issued by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the same time, the Foreign Minister calls on Greek citizens to leave the country immediately.

Specifically, in its announcement, the Foreign Minister states the following:

“We express our deepest sorrow for the sudden death of two expatriates and the serious injury of two others in the village of Granitna, which is located near the contact line in Eastern Ukraine.

We also express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

According to the available evidence, the perpetrators of the double murder are three soldiers of the Ukrainian army, who got involved with the above expatriates for an insignificant reason.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, has requested to speak by telephone with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, in order to emphasize, once again, the need to protect the Greek Community in Ukraine.”
