The new commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine, Sergei Surovikin, admitted this evening that the military situation is tense, especially in the area around Kherson in the south, where many areas are about to be evacuated.
In an interview he gave to the state television channel Rossiya-24, he said that the situation in the area of the Special Military Operation can be described as tense. He added that the Ukrainian Army is constantly trying to attack the positions of Russian soldiers. According to the commander, such attacks take place mainly in the areas of Kupyansk, Liman and Mykolayiv-Krivyi Rih.
Surovikin announced that the Russian Army is about to evacuate the city of Kherson, the capital of the eponymous province.
According to Surovikin, the Russian Army will above all ensure the safe evacuation of the population from Kherson where the Ukrainian strikes against political infrastructure directly threaten the residents’ lives.
The Russian-appointed governor of Kherson confirmed that some civilians would be evacuated, citing the risk of an attack by Ukrainian forces. In a video statement, Vladimir Saldo said residents in four towns would be evacuated from the banks of the Dnieper River because of the risk of a nearby dam being destroyed by Ukrainian shelling.
