A rocket was fired in Israeli territory last night from the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas, the Israeli military said in a statement, adding that it had retaliated by hitting the “underground infrastructure” of the Islamist movement.

The previous rocket launch against Israeli territory from the Palestinian enclave took place in early July.

“A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip was identified and intercepted by the air defence forces,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

A spokesman for Saar Hanegev, a regional council in southern Israel near the Gaza Strip, where air defence sirens sounded late last night, said the rocket did not cause any damage or casualties.

“In response to the rocket launch into Israel from Gaza earlier, fighter jets (…) hit Hamas underground infrastructure in Gaza. We hold Hamas responsible for everything that happens in Gaza,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

Israel and Hamas have been involved in three wars (2008, 2012, 2014). Despite the ceasefire in recent months, the two sides have clashed sporadically, with rockets fired by Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip and retaliatory strikes by the Israeli army.
