Indian and Pakistani forces exchanged fires along the de facto border between the two countries in Kashmir in the early hours of Saturday (26/04), following a similar incident on Friday (25/04), as announced by the Indian Army on Saturday.

The Indian military noted that “unprovoked” small arms fire was fired from several Pakistani army posts along the Line of Control in Kashmir overnight Friday into Saturday.

Indian forces responded appropriately using small arms, the Indian military added in its statement, which clarified that there were no casualties.

Tensions between India and Pakistan, two nuclear powers and US allies, have escalated following a deadly attack on Tuesday in Indian Kashmir.

The government in New Delhi accuses Islamabad of being linked to the attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians, while the government in Islamabad rejects what it calls India’s baseless accusations and warns that Pakistan is ready to defend itself.

Following this attack, the two neighboring countries, which have already been involved in three wars since 1947, have begun adopting a series of punitive measures and retaliatory actions against each other.

The Indian army had announced that on Friday (25/04) small arms fire was briefly exchanged from what it identified as Pakistan, to which it had responded.

The UN Security Council on Friday (25/04) called on the two countries to show maximum restraint.
