The German defence company Helsing unveiled a new autonomous combat drone — the “CA-1 Europa” — marking its entry into the race to develop “loyal wingman” systems for next-generation fighter aircraft.

The reveal took place at a factory outside Munich, Helsing says the CA-1 Europa will make its first flight in 2027 and is expected to be available for military use within the next four years.

The company has placed strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) systems and on reducing production costs.

Measuring 11 metres in length with a 10-metre wingspan, the CA-1 Europa can operate autonomously, in swarms, or as a support asset for manned fighters. It is built around three of Helsing’s AI systems.

The first, Centaur, was already tested with Saab’s Gripen E fighter earlier this year. Alongside Centaur, the CA-1 Europa will integrate Cirra, an AI-based electronic-warfare system designed to counter integrated air defence systems (IADS).

The third AI system is Symphony, an AI mission-coordination platform that orchestrates autonomous operations.

Helsing said that it will invest hundreds of millions of euros in partnership with various European firms, without naming any. The company declined to disclose what weapons the new drone might carry or how much it will cost.

In February, Helsing said it had begun production of 6,000 HX-2 strike drones for Ukraine. When asked how many had been delivered, a company representative replied that the HX-2 is still undergoing testing and will be presented “in the near future.”
