Seventy years have passed since the establishment of the 340 Squadron (340M). In this context, an anniversary event has been planned for Friday, June 2, 2023, which will take place at the 115th Fighter Wing at Souda Air Base.
The 340th Squadron was established in 1953 as the 340th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, at the 112th Fighter Wing with F-84G aircraft. Today it belongs to the 115th Fighter Wing and is based at the Souda base.
The mission of the so-called “Fox” Squadron is to maintain a high degree of efficiency and readiness with appropriate organization, training of personnel and maintenance of the means and systems available, to undertake and successfully conduct air operations whenever required and according to the applicable plans.
The F-84G, F-84F and A/TA-7H aircraft have served in the 340 Squadron in the past. Today the F-16 C/D Block 52+ fighters are in service. The heroic Squadron Leader Kostas Iliakis serving at the 340 Squadron fell on duty on May 23, 2006.
