The Commander of the Hellenic Army Aviation, Lieutenant General George Koumentakis, submitted his resignation at noon on Monday.

According to journalist Costas Alatzas, in the main news bulletin of the OPEN channel, the resignation is related to how the Chinook military helicopters attempted to extinguish the fires.

At the Pentagon, in the Ministry of National Defence, a supreme military council was convened under General Konstantinos Floros, Chief of the General Staff of the National Defence, to determine whether there were any responsibilities regarding the involvement of Chinook military helicopters in extinguishing the wildfires across the country.

According to Costas Alatzas, it remains unclear whether the resignation of Lieutenant General George Koumentakis was requested due to the reduced availability of helicopters as the Army has 14 in its possession, some of which have operated on the fire fronts, or the manner in which they operated.
