The German Rheinmetall has been contracted by the German Ministry of Defence to supply the Ukrainian Army with 300,000 35mm ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft systems. The value of the order, as stated in the company’s announcement, is in the low three-digit million euro range.

Rheinmetall will supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with 150,000 Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot – Tracer (APDS-T) and 150,000 High Explosive Incendiary – Tracer (HEI-T) ammunition. The first delivery of APDS-T will take place in summer 2023. The shift of production from APDS-T to HEI-T is planned for mid-2024.

The German all-weather self-propelled anti-aircraft system was developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann based on the Leopard 1 tank chassis and is equipped with a twin Oerlikon GDF X 35mm cannon, with 320 anti-aircraft rounds, 20 anti-tank missiles and a 76mm twin launcher smoke generator.
