An announcement was issued by the Cyprus Fire Service regarding the reports with connotations about the capabilities of the 33-meter Aerial Ladder Platform, after the operators’ training that took place yesterday in Makariou Avenue in Nicosia.
The announcement of the Fire Service follows:
- All newly-erected tall buildings, based on their height, area and use and following our recommendations as the competent consulting authority, should have their own firefighting equipment and ensure their exit points.

- It is clarified that the implementation and observance of the aforementioned measures ensures the immediate exit of the occupants, the immediate detection of the fire and its direct extinguishing with the use of automated fire extinguishing equipment.
- Aerial ladder platforms are mostly used in rescue missions and, in some cases, to provide assistance in fire extinguishing.
- As already announced, the Fire Service, in addition to the 33-meter aerial ladder platforms available in all Provinces, has been upgraded with an additional 60-meter aerial ladder platform.
- It is noted that such platforms with such specifications are not found in other developed countries where tall buildings are usually more than 150 metres tall and, in some cases, exceed 800 meters. Worldwide, the maximum height that aerial ladder platforms can reach is 112 meters and their use is limited to ground infrastructures and other conditions. Only two aerial ladder platforms of such height (112m) are found globally.

Therefore, in the announcement, it is clarified that under these circumstances, the fire and rescue coverage of these buildings is limited to their own fire extinguishing equipment. Both the construction licensing authorities and the Fire Service, as the competent authority, are adamant in securing and implementing all the above-mentioned measures in order to ensure the safety of the public. In addition, it is clarified that the building on Makariou Avenue in Nicosia, where the operators’ training took place, shown in the photo of this post, has sufficient fire extinguishing equipment and has also secured its necessary exit points.

Although tall buildings over certain heights have always followed the recommendations of the Fire Service, in terms of fire extinguishing equipment and their necessary exit points, the Cyprus Fire Service, in its cooperation with the State, is prepared and has been upgraded based on the new conditions and challenges with continuous upgrade and staff training. It is clarified that the implementation and observance of the aforementioned measures ensures the immediate exit of the occupants, the immediate detection of fire and its direct extinguishing with the use of automated fire extinguishing equipment. Aerial ladder platforms are mostly used in rescue missions and, in some cases, to provide assistance in fire extinguishing.
