Following the success of the “Smart Tunnel” pilot project launched in 2019, which involved the installation of the first equipment condition monitoring system in an Olympia Road tunnel, ES SYSTEMS, a member of the EFA GROUP, and Olympia Road S.A. have proceeded with the deployment of a comprehensive predictive maintenance solution in four additional tunnels, including their associated facilities and equipment (substation buildings and pumping stations) around the Patras ring road.

The complete solution comprises sensors and software that monitor and record real-time data on all tunnel equipment, such as fans, water pumps, power generators, UPS batteries, power packs. Additionally, environmental sensors measure atmospheric elements within the tunnels, including air quality, temperature, and humidity.
According to the company, the sensor hub developed by ES SYSTEMS specifically for this project collects the data from the installed sensors, processes it locally, and then transmits it wirelessly to the cloud. There, the data is stored and analyzed using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms.
The results of the monitored equipment are presented to the end user in real time for each of the four tunnels on the Patras ring road.

The benefits of the system are multiple:
- Increase equipment lifespan
- Significant savings in repair and maintenance costs
- Timely detection of faults and their faster restoration on scheduled days and times.
- Real-time monitoring of key metrics such as temperature, vibration, and power consumption.
- Enhanced safety for passengers and workers through the uninterrupted operation of equipment.
“Following the successful pilot project, we proceeded with the installation of the predictive maintenance solution in all the tunnels of the Patras Perimeter. We are very happy that the ES SYSTEMS solution enhances safety, while allowing early detection of faults and their faster repair.
The system consists of a network of sensors and the smart sensor node developed by the company and transmits the data wirelessly to a platform which transmits the data wirelessly to a platform where the results are displayed in real time”, said the Chief Business Officer of ES SYSTEMS, Dr. Emmanuel Zervakis.
