Denmark has decided to bolster its air defence by acquiring ground-based short-range missile systems of the NASAMS type, as well as the VL MICA and IRIS-T SLM systems. This move is part of the government’s defence policy, as outlined by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last February.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Denmark will spend over $919 million on the procurement of these systems, with the first deliveries expected in 2026.

The acquisition includes:

  • The NASAMS missile by Norway’s Kongsberg, developed jointly with the US company Raytheon;
  • The  VL MICA missile system of MBDA France; and
  • The IRIS-T SLM  missile system by Germany’s Diehl Defence, which will be leased.

🇩🇰Denmark surprises nearly everyone and selects three interim short range ground-based air defence systems at one time in order to have everything in operation by 2026:

NASAMS (Kongsberg)

IRIS-T SLM (Diehl)

MICA (MBDA)

Here we go….

It is worth noting that Denmark received 10 offers, including from suppliers in Turkey, Israel, and Italy, before ultimately deciding to procure systems from France, Germany, and Norway.

According to Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, the systems will gradually become operational between late 2025 and early 2027.

The systems will be deployable across Denmark as required, the minister added. The Air Force’s goal is to protect both the civilian population and military installations.
