On Saturday, 7 February 2025, the University of Western Macedonia launched the DefencEduNet Branch, a strategic collaborative initiative aimed at connecting the Greek defence industry with the academic and research community. 

This collaboration aims to create an innovative ecosystem to promote research, development, and technological production in the defence sector.

The Rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Professor Theodoros Theodoulidis, highlighted that the establishment of the DefencEduNet Branch is a significant step in the University’s development and innovation strategy, underlining the importance of the initiative.

“Our goal is to strengthen the connection between education and research with production and the economy,” he emphasised. “In this transitional period, entrepreneurship and investment in research are decisive factors for the sustainable development of the region,” he added, highlighting the importance of research and industrial cooperation for economic stability and growth.

The President of DefencEduNet, Mr. Anastasios Rozolis, stressed the importance of this cooperation, pointing out that the interconnection of the Greek defence industry with the university and research community is vital for the sustainable development and technological progress of the sector.

He also mentioned that DefencEduNet founding members universities, research centres and the Hellenic Manufacturers of Defence Materiel Association (SEKPY), demonstrating direct support and enhancing cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.

Western Macedonia an Innovation Hub

With its specialised human resources and suitable infrastructure, Western Macedonia can be a growth centre for such activities. At the European level, there is a clear focus on reducing dependence on non-European defence industries and strengthening intra-European cooperation.

DefencEduNet, in collaboration with the University of Western Macedonia, plans to establish an innovation incubator in the region, acting as a hub for connecting researchers and businesses with national and European defence policies.

The combination of geographical location, infrastructure, and specialised personnel makes Western Macedonia an attractive choice for hosting industrial facilities in the defence sector.

The launch of the DefencEduNet Branch at the University of Western Macedonia marks a significant step in the region’s development Greece’s defence technology sector. 

This strategic cooperation aligns with broader European Union policies aimed at enhancing autonomy and security through the development of a strong and competitive defence industry.
