Following a Cabinet meeting, the Minister of Defence, Vassilis Palmas, announced that Cypriot women will be granted the right to volunteer for service in the Armed Forces, starting at the end of October.

According to RIK, the Council of Ministers has approved the decree on the voluntary conscription of women for the classes of 2017–2025.

Mr Palmas stated that the enlistment process is scheduled for 30 and 31 October.

He explained that every woman wishing to join the army will first enlist with the Limassol Military Police, after which she will be able to indicate the unit in which she wishes to serve.

The term of service will last between six and fourteen months.

Mr Palmas underlined that, with this decision, the role and right of women to actively participate in the defence of the Republic of Cyprus are formally recognised.
