Charalambos Petridis | “Black day” for the National Guard

Defence Minister, Charalambos Petridis, characterised today’s incident as “black day” for the National Guard. The Minister expressed his shock for the unjust loss of the National Guard Officer, who fell from a significant height during an exercise.
Speaking at the Nicosia General Hospital, where he visited the relatives of the unfortunate Officer, the Minister of Defence said that he has already given instructions for an in-depth investigation of the tragic event, while expressing his sincere condolences to the Officer’s family and relatives.
“I am shocked by the unjust loss of our Officer. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I have given instructions for an in-depth investigation into this tragic event,” he said.

He added that the Police are investigating the accident in the context of the death investigation, the results of which will be awaited.
It is recalled that the accident occurred in the morning during an exercise of the National Guard in the area of Trooditissa.
The Officer of the National Guard, as part of a planned training focusing on “military search at altitude” fell to the ground from a significant height under conditions that are being investigated.
The Officer was evacuated by helicopter to the General Hospital of Nicosia, where the doctors pronounced him dead.
