What had preceded
The process of ratifying the Electoral College vote for a new US president had begun earlier. Joe Biden has received 306 voters against 232 for Donald Trump who – either through his campaign or his allies in various states – tried and failed to overturn the results.

At today’s Congress meeting, chaired by Vice President Pence, Republican members of the House and Senate challenged the results of Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
Trump, speaking earlier today at a rally of thousands of supporters in front of the Lincoln Memorial, called on Pence not to ratify the result and to urge states to decide. However, in his speech, the leader of the majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, stressed that nothing supports Trump’s claims concerning a massive election fraud.
At the rally Trump also attacked Republicans, who do not share his stance, out of cowardice and ingratitude, and stressed that he would not acknowledge the result, claiming that he was the winner.

According to the latest developments, Trump tweeted: “I know that our election was stolen, we love you, but you must go home now.”

President-elect Joe Biden said:
“I am shocked and saddened by what is happening in our Nation. We have reached a dark period for our Republic. The work of the next four years must be the resurrection of democracy with respect for the rule of law. The role of politics is to solve problems and not to have such chaos scenes. Democracy is fragile and demands leaders who are not committed to the pursuit of their own power.”

Explosive devices
Police spokesman confirms that two explosive devices were found and neutralized – one in the Capitol and one in the offices of the Republican Party.
National Guard Intervention
In addition to the FBI men who have gone to the Capitol, the National Guard is expected to be deployed on the streets of the capital to help police enforce order during the curfew which will last 12 hours, from 6pm until 6am local time.
However, it is not ruled out that the Congress will continue its session to ratify the votes of the Electoral College once the situation is normalized. Watch the developments live here:
