Tension is high on Israel’s northern border following the death of a Hezbollah fighter in a seeming Israeli air strike in Syria.

The Israeli military said there had been a “security incident” on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon on Monday and that its forces had been engaged in “ongoing combat”.

Israel’s N12 TV News reported an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters, while reporting on a series of explosions in the area.

Reuters news agency, citing anonymous sources familiar with the situation, said the Lebanese group Hezbollah carried out an operation on Monday against the Israeli army in the disputed Shebaa Farms area.

So far there has been no direct statement from Hezbollah on the incident. A resident of the town of Khiam, about 5 kilometers (2 miles) from Lebanon’s southern border, told Al Jazeera that she heard about two dozen explosions and witnessed large columns of smoke rising near Mount Hermon.
