In a notable initiative, Lockheed Martin is aiming to accelerate the full-scale development of artificial intelligence (AI) in operational settings through the creation of a virtual testing ground, known as the AI Fight Club programme. The aim is to assess how AI systems perform across air, land, sea, and space domains.

Through the AI Fight Club programme, Lockheed Martin is inviting teams from across the defence industry to compete in a virtual arena based on simulated military scenarios. Participants will subject their AI systems to complex, guided missions that closely mirror real-world operations.

The ultimate objective of AI Fight Club is to identify the most “lethal” AI systems—those that are capable, resilient, and adaptable—for potential future use by the United States Armed Forces across multiple operational domains. The launch of the programme comes as the US military moves to further integrate AI into its strategies and capabilities.

AI systems will be tested in mission scenarios including airspace contestation, coastal defence, and space surveillance, while maintaining strict adherence to US operational protocols.

By fostering a competitive and research-driven environment, Lockheed Martin aims to accelerate innovation while simultaneously identifying and addressing potential weaknesses in AI implementation—well before these systems are deployed on the battlefield.

The company is currently finalising preparations for the virtual arena that will host the inaugural AI Fight Club trials, with the first competition scheduled to take place in late 2025.
