The Chinese military announced today that it had recently conducted exercises around Taiwan as a “serious warning” against its “collusion” with the United States, Chinese media reported.

On Monday, US President, Joe Biden, angered China by appearing to send a message that the US policy of “strategic ambiguity” over Taiwan has changed, saying the US would be militarily involved if China attacked the island. However, Biden said yesterday, Tuesday, that there is no change in US policy.

The Eastern Operations Command of the People’s Liberation Army said it recently conducted patrols and exercises in the air and sea around Taiwan.

“It’s a serious warning against the recent collusion between the United States and Taiwan,” said Xi Yi, a spokesman of the Command, according to state television. “It is hypocritical and useless for the United States to say one thing and do another on the issue of Taiwan,” he said.

China has never renounced the use of force to bring democratically ruled Taiwan under its control and the Taiwan Straits remain a potential military flashpoint.

While the United States adheres to the One China policy, recognizing only Beijing, it has made a commitment under the US Relations with Taiwan Act “to help equip Taiwan with the means to defend itself.”

Despite this, they maintained a long policy of uncertainty about their reaction to a possible Chinese attack on the island.
