The Minister of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, Charalambos Petridis, and the Chief of the Armed Forces of Jordan, General Yousef A. Al-Hnaity, held a working meeting today in Larnaca, in order to further promote the cooperation between Cyprus and Jordan in the field of Defence and Security.

The meeting took place in the context of the first bilateral meeting of high-level delegations of the Republic of Cyprus and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where issues of foreign affairs, regional security and defence were discussed.

The Minister of Defence and the Chief of the Jordanian Armed Forces reviewed the latest developments and progress made bilaterally in the field of defence and security and stressed their common will to further strengthen their cooperation in the field of defence in order to address security challenges and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the wider region. It is recalled that the Republic of Cyprus had, in the framework of the Aqaba Process, provided military equipment in support of the Jordanian Armed Forces to fight terrorism in the region.

The Minister of Defence and the Chief of the Armed Forces of Jordan confirmed that the defence cooperation between the two countries promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience as well as the productive combination of capabilities and benefits, through the participation in training programs and joint exercises. The two countries are currently conducting joint military exercises, both in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus and Jordan.

Mr. Petridis and General Yousef A. Al-Hnaity considered the possibility of creating a tripartite mechanism of cooperation in the field of Defence and Security following the standards of other successful formations that Cyprus has created with friendly countries and it seemed that such a perspective is supported by the two countries, with the aim of promoting security and peace in the wider region.
